Help Us Help Those Who
 Have Lost Everything

Picture
Dear Friends and Family,

HOME--there's no place like it. Tragically, tens of thousands of people are driven from their homes by war and persecution every year. Though they would love nothing more than to return to their homes, in many cases, doing so would cost them their lives.

As circumstances around the world become critically unstable, the need to resettle these families has reached a crisis point. They have lost absolutely everything of material value. What they have in abundance, however, is courage, hope, and dignity.

Would you like to help improve the lives of these brave families? Through an amazing Chicago organization called RefugeeOne, a group of us have come together to steward a refugee family through their arrival and acclimation in the Chicago area. We are setting up their apartment, stocking their pantry, helping tutor them in English, showing them around the city, and helping them prepare to enter the workforce so they can become self-reliant. The family has done the hard part -- surviving unspeakable atrocities and taking that leap of faith to start anew in a foreign land. We’re just here to give them a hand.

Here’s where you come in. Our team is responsible for raising $8,500 to help cover the cost of rent, necessities, and other expenses for the family's first few months here. After that, they will be working, thus achieving their cherished dream of self-sufficiency. We are donating our own money (lots of it!) as well as our time and our furniture.

Will you please join us by donating towards our fundraising goal? We appreciate any and all amounts! We would also love in-kind donations of furniture and housewares. Check out the list below and email us: thekalmans@yahoo.com with the in-kind items you can offer.

Most of all, we appreciate knowing there are so many kind-hearted people who believe (as we do) that together we can make the world a little bit better, one family at a time. Many, many thanks!

Facts About Refugees

A refugee is someone who is forced to flee or leave their country due to persecution, conflict, or war.

There are more than 21 million refugees in the world!

Less than 1% of refugees are resettled in a third country.

The U.S. is expected to take 110,000 refugees this year.

RefugeeOne is expected to resettle more than 900 refugees this year.

Refugees come from many countries around the world such as Burma, Iraq, Bhutan, The Democratic Republic of Congo, Somalia, Sudan, South Sudan, Syria, Ethiopia,  and Afghanistan.

The United States takes 18 to 24 months on average to carefully vet each applicant to make sure he or she poses no security risk.
