“You shall not oppress a stranger, since you yourselves know the feelings of a stranger, for you also were strangers in the land of Egypt.” -Exodus(23:9)
Dear Kol Sasson Community and Friends,
In every generation, we are obligated to see ourselves as though we came forth from Egypt. As we move towards celebrating Passover and the retelling of the Exodus, let us not forget the most vulnerable. We all know that the combined threats of war, persecution and terrorism around the world in recent years have led to a refugee crisis. This is the time to act and to put our Jewish values and teachings to practice to affect specific change.
Kol Sasson is partnering with RefugeeOne, an organization that has been serving Chicago’s refugee population since 1982. With the volunteer and financial assistance of its partners, RefugeeOne assists thousands of refugees and immigrants each year by arranging housing, teaching English, helping with acclimation to American culture, teaching computer and job readiness skills, securing employment, obtaining medical and other care, and dealing with trauma through counseling.
Kol Sasson is planning to co-sponsor a family through RefugeeOne, and as part of this effort we are obligated to raise $10,000 to aid in resettling a family for six months. We also need a cohort of members to become actively involved with the family, including mentors, tutors, and people willing to commit to weekly or bi-weekly visits. However, our first milestone in this project will be raising the necessary funds.
Last year, many of us pledged specific amounts towards this effort before we got started. We will be reaching out to you and your family to see if you can still honor your pledge, or perhaps consider adding to it. This page is purely for fundraising purposes; we will soon distribute a list of necessary items we are collecting for the family, as well as affirming the various time commitments from families associated with this initiative.
No one family or individual can meet these important goals alone. We are turning to you, our community, to come together in order to combine our contributed time, efforts, and funds to make this support for this family possible. Collectively, with each individual and each family giving to this goal, we can make it a reality.
