LET’S DO IT AGAIN
HELP THE BETHANY-PILGRIM PARTNERSHIP
WELCOME ANOTHER REFUGEE FAMILY
You may already know about the profoundly rewarding experience that our group had last year when we co-sponsored a Rohingya refugee family fleeing their homeland of Burma. Had they not escaped and, with the help of RefugeeOne, found safety and support in the United States, they would have suffered the continued persecution, trauma and even death that so many of their countrymen did.
As members of two Chicago religious organizations—Pilgrim Lutheran Church and School and Bethany United Church of Christ—we were fortunate to have the opportunity to work with this beautiful family of four for almost a year, helping them acclimate to a culture not their own and develop their own skills so that they could support themselves in their new city. For so many of us, it was an experience we will never forget—encouraging them as they struggled with a new language, watching the delight on the faces of 6-year-old twins as they celebrated their first Halloween, and seeing the entire family settle into the warmth of friendship that we were able to offer.
Many of you were part of that. Your gifts helped us do what we needed to do to help our family.
Now we have the opportunity to do it again. Although the number of refugees currently being accepted into the U.S. sadly continues to decrease, there is still a need for co-sponsors to help families adjust to their new ways of living. We are proud to have the chance to once again work with RefugeeOne, a Chicago nonprofit, 501(c)(3) organization that has assisted in the resettlement of tens of thousands of refugees from countries like Syria, Burma, the Congo, Bhutan and Somalia over the past three decades. This organization provided us with ongoing training and support as we work with our family.
To become official co-sponsors, we now need to raise $8,000, which RefugeeOne will use to subsidize their rent and provide other needed services for the family’s first six months. We already have a good start on this fundraising goal—through funds raised at our March Chili and Dessert Cook-off (thank you to all of you who helped by cooking, attending or donating to that event) the September PilgrimFest (and thank you to those participants as well). So we are on our way.
Please consider helping us reach our final goal with a tax-deductible gift. We are excited about the challenge and the rewards this project will bring, and look forward to keeping our supporters informed of the progress and joys we achieve.
