Who We Are
Our mission is simple:
We create opportunity for refugees fleeing war, terror, and persecution to build new lives of safety, dignity, and self-reliance.
Every year, RefugeeOne assists more than 2,500 refugees and immigrants of all ages, ethnicities, faiths, and backgrounds. As the largest refugee resettlement agency in Illinois, we walk alongside refugees on the path to self-reliance, greeting every refugee at O'Hare Airport, finding and furnishing their first apartments, and offering a full-range of services to help them acclimate to life in America.
Our primary focus is assisting refugees in becoming independent, self-sufficient members of our community in as few as 6-9 months. With the support of 1,000 volunteers, we provide resources to help refugees learn English, develop job skills, secure employment, obtain mental and physical health care, apply for citizenship, and strengthen their families.
Who We Serve
Refugees come from all parts of the world. Since 1982, RefugeeOne has resettled tens-of-thousands of refugees from every major world crisis, including: Cambodian survivors of the killing fields, Africans fleeing genocide in countries like Rwanda, Jews avoiding Communist oppression, and Iranians targeted by the Islamic Revolution. In 2005, we even provided assistance for Americans displaced by Hurricane Katrina.
Currently, the majority of the refugees we serve are from the Middle East, including Syria and Iraq, Southeast Asia, and Eastern Africa.
